Packung has successfully completed the implementation of a fully automated packaging line for Notino, one of Europe’s largest online beauty and fragrance retailers. The project represents a significant step in the automation of end-of-line logistics processes, delivering higher packing speed, stable performance, and reduced shipping errors.
In the fast-paced world of e-commerce, where seconds matter and customer experience is critical, optimizing the packaging process is a key competitive factor. The newly implemented line covers the entire process — from carton preparation to final shipment inspection before dispatch.
The project was led from the outset by Adam Kratochvíl as Solution Lead, with Zdeněk Slavík serving as Project Manager.
The automated packaging line is designed as a continuous process with a strong emphasis on smooth shipment flow and minimal manual intervention.
Process Overview
- Carton Bottom Forming
The process begins with automatic carton erection and precise forming of the box bottom, ensuring consistent quality from the very first step.
- Film Application to the Carton Bottom
A fixation film is applied inside the carton, enabling secure product stabilization without the need for traditional void-fill materials.
- Buffer Creation at Packing Stations
The system creates an intelligent buffer of pre-prepared cartons at packing stations, eliminating downtime and increasing operator productivity.
- Product Placement into Prepared Carton
Operators place ordered products into the prepared carton. The fixation process is then completed automatically without additional handling.
- Film Sealing for Product Stabilization
Thermal sealing of the film stabilizes products inside the box and protects them against movement during transportation. This method is particularly suitable for fragile items such as perfumes and cosmetics.
- Carton Closing
After fixation, the carton is automatically closed and sealed without operator intervention.
- Rotation to Final Position
The shipment is rotated into the optimal position for subsequent process steps.
- Shipping Label Application
The system automatically applies the shipping label based on data from internal warehouse and order management systems.
- Final Inspection
Before dispatch, a final verification of packaging accuracy and shipment identification is performed, minimizing the risk of errors.
- Higher Capacity and Stable Peak Performance
One of the main objectives of the project was to create a robust solution capable of handling seasonal fluctuations such as promotional campaigns and pre-Christmas peaks. Automation ensures stable performance independent of manual labor availability while maintaining consistent packaging quality.
Key benefits of the solution include:
- Increased number of packed shipments per hour
- Reduced physical workload for operators
- Lower labeling error rates
- Enhanced product protection during transport
- Optimized packaging material consumption
Role as a System Integrator
The project was not merely a supply of individual technologies but a comprehensive integration into the client’s existing logistics environment. The solution is connected to internal warehouse and order management systems, enabling real-time data synchronization — from order processing to final shipment dispatch.
The modular design also allows for future expansion and scalability in line with shipment volume growth.
Automation as a Standard in Modern E-commerce
Growing pressure for faster delivery times, higher shipping accuracy, and more sustainable packaging processes makes automation a key element of logistics strategy. The implementation of this packaging line for Notino confirms that end-of-line automation is one of the most effective ways to increase distribution center performance.
This project further strengthens Packung’s position as a technology partner for modern e-commerce and logistics operations.
